This is my attempt at something a little different. This is photo of a Green Tree Monitor (Varanus prasinus) from the tropical forests and swamps of New Guinea. These beautiful lizards are well adapted to there tree-dwelling life thanks to a prehensile tail that is used for gripping branches. Its diet consists mostly of insects (Cockroaches, centipedes, spiders, and stick insects); however some of the larger Monitors will occasionally eat small mammals and birds.
What makes this photo different for me, is that it's my first attempt at using an Ultra Violet light to show off the animals beautiful colors. Photo taken at the Memphis Zoo on 2-22-12
